Thoughts Along the Way
Working notes on metaphors, questions, and revisions that arise during research. They record an open process of thought rather than settled theoretical claims.
The Tree Metaphor
A theoretical account of how macroplanning, microplanning, threshold crossing, incrementality, and recursion jointly sustain the open-ended growth of speech.
02From the Syntactic Backbone to the Generative Trunk
A distinction between the core formal structure identified in a completed sentence and the preverbal structure that first enables an utterance to launch and grow.
The tree metaphor represents speech production as open-ended generation: an utterance is not globally completed before speech begins, but launches when a local structure crosses a threshold under the constraint of an overarching intention, and then develops through incrementality and recursion.
Macroplanning: the branch network
Through macroplanning, the overarching intention diffuses into a Subgoal Network. Linearization establishes relations and an order of advance among subgoals, forming the macroscopic trunk-and-branch organization of discourse growth. When processing enters the current subgoal, functional orientation specifies the local direction of growth, conceptual focus becomes the organizing center, and relevant conceptual nodes form a Local Conceptual Network.
Microplanning: the local bud
The local conceptual network is analogous to a bud at a node. Although not yet extended into a branch, a bud already possesses a growth center, an internal configuration, an initial axis, and a connection to the parent branch. Correspondingly, a microplan is not yet a complete utterance, but it has organized the conceptual elements required around the current focus, established a minimal relational configuration, and retained a functional connection to the current subgoal and the discourse already produced.
Threshold: the onset of growth
The threshold marks the critical transition from potential organization to linguistic realization. When the minimal relational configuration centered on the conceptual focus acquires the capacity for linguistic encoding, the bud begins to sprout and the local structure enters formulation. The threshold is therefore not the completion of planning, but the moment at which a local network with a minimally sufficient generative configuration acquires the capacity for actual growth.
Incrementality and recursion
Formulation initiates the extension of the branch. Incrementality incorporates new conceptual nodes into the current local network; recursion allows a newly incorporated node to become a new organizing center and trigger another local network. Each newly formed structure is both the outcome of current processing and a condition for subsequent processing.
Macroplanning and microplanning thus instantiate the same network-generating logic at different scales. Macroplanning generates and develops the subgoal network; microplanning generates and develops the local conceptual network. Both sustain speech through node formation, threshold crossing, incremental expansion, and recursive reorganization.
Macroplanning generates the branch network; microplanning forms the local bud; the threshold initiates sprouting; incrementality drives extension; recursion produces new buds.
The product-oriented backbone
Traditional grammar identifies the backbone of a sentence as the subject–predicate, subject–verb–object, or subject–linking verb–complement structure that remains analytically central once modifying elements are set aside. This is a product-oriented backbone: it identifies the core syntactic constituents and formal dependencies of an already formed sentence.
Because the everyday meaning of “backbone” also evokes primacy and centrality, early or non-specialist interpretations may extend syntactic centrality into informational centrality, treating the backbone as the deepest or most information-bearing part of the sentence and all other structures as secondary additions. This is not a necessary claim of traditional grammar, but a possible conflation of formal, informational, and generative centrality.
Generative centrality
Syntactic center, informational center, and generative point of departure are distinct dimensions. The syntactic backbone occupies a central position in the formal organization of a completed sentence, but need not carry its most consequential information. Likewise, the structure that forms first and initiates linguistic encoding need not contain the entire propositional content. Complex or important information may enter later, while the earlier structure establishes contextual linkage, functional direction, perspective, or an open relational interface.
Within the tree metaphor, the generative trunk is not a formal skeleton extracted from a completed sentence. It is an open structure that first acquires the capacity for growth during preverbal conceptual organization.
Formation of the generative trunk
Through macroplanning, the overarching intention diffuses into a Subgoal Network, whose linearization establishes a macroscopic path of advance. When processing reaches the current subgoal, relevant concepts form a Local Conceptual Network around the current conceptual focus. Functional orientation specifies the communicative function to be realized; perspective determines how experience is organized; information status constrains what must be made explicit; and minimal relational configuration organizes the participants, events, or states required for launch.
The local conceptual network need not be globally complete before linguistic encoding begins. The first open structure to reach a minimally sufficient state of organization, acquire linguistic encodability, and retain interfaces for subsequent conceptual nodes is the preverbal generative trunk.
Trunkhood as a generative property
The trunkhood of this structure is determined not by informational weight but by three generative properties: early formation, launch sufficiency, and capacity for continued growth. It may carry the principal propositional content, or it may function as an informationally light but generatively efficient scaffold. It need not contain all later information; it must only provide the minimal organization required to establish communicative direction, a local center, necessary conceptual relations, and an initial path of development. Unfinished content may enter incrementally after encoding begins and recursively establish new local organizations.
The generative trunk is therefore neither a fixed, universally pre-stored sentence template nor a frame selected in advance and subsequently filled. It is the real-time convergence of communicative and processing constraints. The same conceptual content may yield different generative points of departure under different intentions, perspectives, conceptual foci, and information states, and may consequently be realized in different syntactic forms.
Two explanatory levels
The traditional syntactic backbone and the preverbal generative trunk are not competing accounts. They belong to product analysis and process explanation respectively. The former identifies the core formal organization of a completed sentence; the latter explains which preverbal structure can first initiate linguistic encoding while global discourse planning remains incomplete and how speech can continue to grow from it.
The preverbal generative trunk is the first open structure within a local conceptual network to acquire linguistic encodability through a minimally sufficient relational configuration. Its trunkhood derives not from carrying the core information, but from enabling timely launch and preserving interfaces for incremental and recursive growth.
Taking psycholinguistic speech-production theory as its overarching architecture, the Operable Mechanism moves inside the Conceptualizer and integrates working memory, conceptual structure, cognitive grammar, systemic functional linguistics, and cognitive fluency to explain how communicative intention is preverbally organized through the joint operation of mental representation and attentional control, and transformed into speech that can be smoothly initiated and continuously advanced.

English Speaking Lab
The Lab brings together four interconnected modules—American Pronunciation, American Connected Speech, a Sentence-Construction Framework, and a Fluency Mechanism—to form a systematic pathway from accurate pronunciation and natural speech flow to clear sentence construction and fluent, sustained production.
Systematic Formal Knowledge and the Problem of Real-Time Generation
Between 2008 and 2010, systematic work on American pronunciation produced an integrated training system, while sustained study of traditional grammar, psycholinguistics, and philosophy of language yielded an explanatory framework for English syntax. Yet extensive formal knowledge and practice did not translate naturally into fluent speech, establishing the enduring question of how declarative linguistic knowledge becomes usable in real time.
Functional Expansion of the Syntax Framework and the Pursuit of Fluency
During M.A. study at Nankai University, continued American-pronunciation training and teaching were accompanied by the integration of systemic functional linguistics into the established syntax framework, with the aim of promoting fluency through more systematic and functionally organized sentence generation; the continuing difficulty of real-time production showed that syntactic refinement alone could not resolve the problem.
Pedagogical Translation of the Pronunciation and Syntax Systems
Following the appointment at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics Pearl River College in 2014, the established pronunciation and syntax systems were translated into explicit instructional practice. Their presentation won first prize in the 2015 FLTRP “Star Teacher” National Final; a subsequent account of American English sound-change patterns won first prize in the 2016 Second China Foreign Language Micro-Lecture Competition National Final.
The Persistent Fluency Problem and the Turn to Attentional Resources
Continued difficulty in sustaining spontaneous speech despite substantial linguistic knowledge exposed the divide between knowledge availability and online usability, gradually reframing the problem in terms of attentional limits, monitoring load, working memory, and real-time processing pressure.
Attentional-Resource Expansion Strategies
Drawing on Segalowitz’s cognitive account of L2 fluency, an institutional key project on speech-rate reduction and pause extension developed temporal-support strategies intended to release attentional resources and create conditions for conceptual organization and linguistic encoding during online production.
Initial Construction of the Operable Online Production Mechanism
A Tianjin Municipal Education Commission project shifted the inquiry from how processing time might be secured to how speech is organized within that time. Macroplan decomposition and linearization, preverbal organization in microplanning, and the Speech-Onset Timing Hypothesis together established an initial operable pathway from communicative intention to speech initiation.
Theoretical Development Inside the Conceptualizer
The inquiry then moved inside the Conceptualizer through an integrated examination of cognitive science, conceptual semantics, cognitive grammar, working memory, and L2 speech-production models, extending the mechanism’s account of how communicative intention is formed and declarative knowledge converges into preverbal information.
Formal Model Construction and Intelligent Applications
The twelfth China Foreign Language Education Fund project advanced the mechanism from a theoretical pathway toward formal model construction; in parallel, ChatGPT voice interaction supported the development of intelligent speaking assistants and pedagogical agents that embed the mechanism in spoken practice, immediate feedback, and instructional design.
Reciprocal Integration of Research and Teaching
Publication of the operable online-production mechanism gave the framework a systematic scholarly account. In the same year, How to Speak English Fluently?, a teaching presentation centered on the mechanism, received the National Grand Prize in the Tenth National College English Teachers’ Basic Teaching Skills Competition, followed by first prize in the Tianjin Final of the Sixteenth SFLEP National Foreign Language Teaching Contest.
The Speech Launch Threshold and International Scholarly Presentation
The paper Online Cognitive Processing in L2 Speech Production: An Operable Mechanism from Communicative Intention to Articulation Onset was presented at Beijing Foreign Studies University during the Inaugural Conference of the Division of Biolinguistics, Chinese Society for Cognitive Science, and the Fifth International Conference on Biolinguistics and Language Acquisition. The research isolated the Speech Launch Threshold and specified functional orientation, conceptual focus, and minimal relational configuration as the core preverbal conditions for speech initiation and continued progression.
